PODCAST: Both Sides of the Chart
Check out the podcast discussion with my dear friend Christine Moyer at Unsteady & Unfiltered on Spotify! The topic I discuss with Christine is specifically about vestibular disorders.
Vestibular disorders affect the inner ear and brain areas that process sensory information involved in controlling balance and eye movements. Two notable vestibular disorders we discuss as patient's and as myself as a clinician my perspective from both sides of the chart:
1. Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD)
PPPD is a chronic vestibular disorder characterized by:
-
Persistent sensation of non-spinning dizziness or unsteadiness
-
Symptoms worsened by upright posture, active or passive motion, and complex visual environments (like crowds or scrolling screens)
-
Often triggered by an acute vestibular event (like vertigo), but symptoms persist after the initial cause has resolved
-
Commonly associated with anxiety or sensory overload
2. Meniere’s Disease
Meniere’s disease is a disorder of the inner ear involving:
-
Recurrent episodes of vertigo (spinning sensation) often lasting 20 minutes to several hours
-
Fluctuating hearing loss, particularly in low frequencies
-
Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ear)
-
A sense of fullness or pressure in the affected ear
-
Believed to be related to abnormal fluid buildup in the inner ear (endolymphatic hydrops), though exact cause is unknown
Both conditions can significantly impact quality of life and often require a multidisciplinary approach including medical treatment, vestibular rehabilitation, and lifestyle adjustments.
